People often wonder if there are specific foods they can eat to reduce their risk of getting specific diseases. We know about "heart healthy diets," for example, but is there actually a "breast cancer diet"?
Well, I haven’t heard of a specific diet with that name, but there is such a diet! Here's some of what we know about foods that can help reduce your risk of getting breast cancer or any other cancer for that matter:
1. Keep to a low-fat diet of no more than 30 grams of fat a day. This helps you maintain a balanced diet that also keeps your weight in check. We store estrogen in our body fat, so the less extra fat we carry around, the better!
2. Incorporate broccoli sprouts into your meals. Just a pinch (1 oz.) is all you need! Broccoli sprouts contain a compound called sulfuraphane that has been scientifically proven to reduce cancer risk.
3. Have 6 servings of fruits and veggies every day. Dark green and orange-colored ones are preferred.
4. Eat tomatoes rich in licopene. This is touted as another cancer-fighting agent.
5. Eat small, frequent meals instead of large ones, to aid your digestion and improve your metabolism. All of our clients at Fitness Together (ftspringfield.com) are provided with either a 5 or 6 meals-a-day eating plan. This includes a complete 7 day menu and a grocery list. If you need your eating plan updated, or would like to set up a nutrition consultation with one of our fitness consultants, please contact us at 726.7613 or reply to this email.
6. Make green tea, which is rich in antioxidants, your new nightcap. Our nutrition and supplement supplier, Shaklee, http://www.shaklee.net/ftspringfield, has two excellent tasting energy teas that are great tasting, all natural with no artificial sweeteners. They both contain powerful antioxidants for immune system strength. They come in Green Tea and Pomegranate (my favorite). Ask at the studio for a free sample.
7. Snack on a little dark chocolate once in a while - it's been proven to have cancer-fighting agents. But of course eat this sweet in moderation - or you'll need to go back to the first point in this list!
