Turning Your New Year's Resolutions into Real Results
STEP 3: Planning & Preparing for the Stumbling Blocks
If you have been through steps 1 & 2 then you know what you want and you know why you want it. Now it is important to identify the obstacles that may get in the way of you achieving your goal. (Go here if you missed steps 1 & 2 -- or copy and paste this address into your web browser: http://ftspringfield.com/Blog.html).
This is very important because if you know what's coming, you can have a plan to deal with it before it robs you of your goals.
The number one thing I hear people say is that they do not have enough TIME to do their workouts or prepare their meals. Now, I am sure you are busy, BUT if you are really serious about achieving your goals (and a great "WHY" - step 1 - http://ftspringfield.com/realresults.html is the way to get really motivated), then there is a way to find some "hidden" time.
You've heard it said: you always find time to do the things that you want to do! If you want it enough, if it is really important to you, then make it a priority and schedule time to do it. It is that simple. Really...it is.
Another big obstacle is alcohol. Drinking alcohol stops fat burning dead in its tracks! Remember your priorities and what's more important to you. Alcohol can always be added in moderation once you have achieved your goal. Low to zero alcohol is what is necessary to look your best all year round.
Emotional eating and boredom eating is another very common obstacle. Boredom eating is exactly that...eating when you are bored!! The best way to combat this is to keep busy. Find a hobby that keeps your mind off eating to avoid this obstacle -- and stay away from the television! (unless you're exercising while it's on, of course).
Emotional eating describes a situation where people eat to cope with stress or eat to "reward" an achievement. This is a tough one, and there is no easy solution to emotional eating. The best approach is to identify and then avoid "trigger" situations (bars, parties, lunch room at the office, etc.) and "trigger" foods (starches, sugars, alcohol, fast food, etc.). This will help break bad habits and is a great initial strategy.
Your obstacles may be similar to these or a little different. But, just remember to be honest with yourself about what has held you back in the past and this is often a good start to identify your obstacles. Now plan and prepare for them. One of the best methods to be prepared is to get great support and accountability from friends and family. Or hire a personal trainer. We are accountability experts and can help you stay on track when no one else seems to support your goals. Since most people "stumble" over the weekend when with friends or family, it is extremely important to get these people to help and support you. Share your goals with them and get them to help you and not sabotage your efforts (it's not always other people who sabotage our fitness goals -- read here: http://ftspringfield.com/Sabatoge.html).
With the right support and accountability you can achieve the results that you desire and deserve. If you have trouble dealing with the influence of friends and family when it comes to your health and fitness goals, read this article:
